Creation of the State of Israel in 1948
The State of Israel was created in 1948 (Kramer et al., 2007). This was after a struggle that lasted more than 50 years to try to get Israel to become a sovereign state. It was established as the homeland of the Jews. Theodore Herzl initiated the movement for creating Israel as a sovereign state. His idea was backed by the British Government. Making the Balfour Declaration a success in 1917, the British Government demonstrated that they supported the creation of Israel; a Jewish homeland situated in the Palestine.
Soon after the proclamation of Israel as a state and the departure of the British from the Palestine, the state came under attack from the Arab states neighboring it. These states were not in agreement with the UN partition plan. The plan had proposed the partitioning of the Palestine forming the Jewish states and the Arab states. This resulted in Israel’s war of independence. This war came to an end in 1949 after Israel, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria came to armistice agreements. Israel’s territory was thus increased by 50 % (Kramer et al., 2007).
