Essay: What is Illiteracy
What is illiteracy? Illiteracy is defined as the inability to read and write. The broader view of this basic definition is that an illiterate person may not be able to read basic instructions on a medicine bottle, read a book to their child, find a job on the classified ads, read the front page of a newspaper or even follow basic safety signs. The inability to read and write can mean many things to a person.
Many of them feel desperate and humiliated when faced with situations where reading and writing is required. They find it difficult to cope with daily activities of life like filling out a cheque, making educated conversations with people and following and understanding the ever-changing political and economic scenarios. An illiterate person may also find it difficult to find a decent job that will be able to sustain him and his family especially in today’s failing job market where even graduates are finding it hard to get employment.
